Majestic Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is truly a sight to behold. The Lower Falls plunge majestically 308 feet to the canyon below, spraying mist in all directions. The yellow slopes of rock descend gracefully down to the river.

As far as I’ve been able to tell, no one has ever captured the entire valley along with the falls from this vantage point before. While I’m confident it has been done in some fashion, I have yet to see a single example of it other than this photo.

It wasn’t my goal to produce an image that hadn’t been made before. I simply thought, “I’d love to get the top of the falls in the same image as the entire canyon” and set out to do it.

It’s not at easy as you’d think, though. Even a professional ultrawide lens like the one I used is not nearly wide enough to capture the entire thing. What you see here is actually the result of a handheld panorama shot with several exposures stitched together in post-processing.

The result, I think, comes close to capturing some of majesty of viewing it in person. You can almost taste the sulfur in the air and feel the power of the mighty river spilling over the ledge hundreds of feet to the valley below.

I also got quite lucky with the light, which was still a beautiful color from the morning sun, but with the sun high enough in the sky to illuminate all the way to the bottom.

Yellowstone truly is a remarkable place.
